The truth is that a few years ago I did not give much importance to how to get followers on Instagram or my personal brand there. It seemed like a social network to which I was not going to give much use, and what’s more, I had my profile set up with the option of keeping my photos private with some family photos I did not want anyone to see.
HOW TO GET FOLLOWERS ON INSTAGRAM
It took me a while to see that Instagram was here to stay and that it was going to be one of the most important social networks as statistics show. And it is also true that a while ago I had not taken the taste or the roll to this social network, but as soon as I saw the grace I began to like more and more. Today I like it a lot.
The point is that I began to draw more attention, to want to know more about its operation, what it was that made some users get a lot of followers and above all, how could be taken advantage of at the business level, not only for my personal brand.
WHAT IS THE BEST TIME TO POST ON INSTAGRAM?
I asked that same question myself. What is the best schedule? What is the best day of the week? How many times do you have to publish?
Well, my own experience tells me that if we want to get followers on a regular basis, the idea is to publish at least once a day, as in any other social network.
Publishing on a regular basis gives consistency to your brand and widens your reach, the more people like your photos, the more likely you are that these photos will reach more people.
As for the day of publication, there is no day that stands out from the others as analyzed, it seems that there is a little more activity on Mondays and that it goes down on Sundays. On a personal level, I have not noticed anything in particular.
However, one factor that does influence a lot is the time of publication. And here there is no exact rule, it will depend on the location of your followers and their habits.
For example, in my case, in addition to having followers in Spain, I have many followers from Latin countries or even the United States, and if I publish in the morning those people see much later what I have published. So for me, a good time is to post from 20:00 for example.
When I publish, I always link the publication to Twitter so that a tweet is also published in my account; From there, new followers always come to me. I do not do the same on Facebook. On Facebook, I have linked my fan page instead of my personal profile, and I realized that if I post a photo on the fan page from Instagram, the photo’s scope goes down. What I do is post the photo directly on Facebook without going through Instagram.
I recommend you link your Instagram account to your other social profiles. Also in this way, whenever Instagram detects that a Facebook friend has joined your platform, it will send you a notification so you can follow him.
TOOLS TO DETERMINE THE BEST PUBLICATION SCHEDULE
Each account is different and each account has to determine what is the best time to publish on Instagram in your case, and for that, there are some tools that analyze the impact of your photos according to the time of publication, and they tell you which is the best time to make future publications.
What I usually use are two:
- Iconosquare is a desktop tool that allows you to manage your Instagram account from your computer. The only thing that does not allow you to do is to post photos from there, but you can mark the photos of your followers that you like (in addition very quickly), and leave comments. The good thing about this tool is the number of statistics it gives you about your account, such as the best times to publish or what are the filters that you have used that have the highest engagement in your photos. This tool is free, but the reports of its statistical part are not in real time.
- TakeOff: with this application available for iOS and Google Play you can schedule posts on Instagram, and at the best moment, you will receive a notification of the application suggesting that you publish at that moment. It does not publish for you, it prepares you to do it directly on Instagram and it is you who ends up publishing there. This application is also free.
HOW TO SCHEDULE POSTS ON INSTAGRAM?
This is a feature that is not available on the Instagram mobile app, and if you want to have it you will have to use a third-party application.
Some tools to schedule posts on Instagram are:
- Schedugram: with this tools, you can manage your account with a desktop application and schedule publications, and it also has something that is very interesting for agencies, which allows you to manage several Instagram accounts. This tool, like any good tool worth its salt, is not free, it has a cost that goes from $ 20 per month.
- TakeOff: I’ve already talked about it in the previous point. It is free and you can manage it from your mobile phone.
- Latergram: available for mobile phones, it is free to sign up and then you charge a monthly fee, and with it, you can schedule publications but, like TakeOff, it warns you to do it yourself.
USE OF HASHTAGS
As foolish as it may seem at first I did not put a miserable hashtag in any of my photos because I was not aware of the difference between publishing with or without hashtags on Instagram.
One day talking to a friend about engagement and comparing who had more engagement in their publications (things we do sometimes freaks that we are dedicated to this), he said: “of course, I have more engagement than you because I use many popular hashtags”.
Did it really affect a hashtag so much? I found it hard to believe it. The reason is that there are bots that make like photos that use a certain hashtag, tools that monitor them, and obviously, there are also brands and people monitoring them, and that raises the number of likes (not too much, but something).
The amount of hashtags that we should use, I think, is not a determining factor. There are studies that say that it is best to publish from 1 to 4 hashtags and never exceed 5, while others say that 11 is the amount that works best.
There are tops with the 100 most popular hashtags and there are websites like TagsForLikes that tell you which are the hashtags that you can use in your photos to get more likes, although I am not very much in favor of using them.
MOST USED FILTERS
This social network in which the visual has a great impact, filters play an important role. One of the ones that I like most is Valencia, and apparently, it is also one of the most used.
Personally, when I go to upload a photo I try to use common sense and let myself be guided by my photographic criteria (which is probably null) and curiously I almost always use the same filters.
But a good strategy is to use the filters that most other people use. If they have chosen it for their photos, probably your photos in which you use those filters will be more likely to like. Remember, more likes, more comments, more diffusion, more followers.
In the Populagram website, you will see a count with the number of photos that use a certain filter. “Normal”, which is not using filters in your photos, is the most usual and what more users do.
WHAT CONTENT WORKS ON INSTAGRAM?
The part that I like so much about this social network is the one that allows brands to show a more human and more private side, which at the same time is a closer side for their audience and that connects more. I think it is a good channel to take into account in any content marketing strategy.
Being able to upload photographs or short videos makes the possibilities immense, imagination to power.
In my case, I like to upload images with motivational and inspiring text. I know, there’s a lot of that, so what? I like it, I’ve been doing it for a long time, it works for me and I prefer to send a more positive message to the world than a message of complaint.
I share many personal photos (although never familiar, it is one of my rules) with places where I go, places I travel, gifts or books that send me, photos of some professional photoshoot, photos with friends and things of my day today.
Businesses have many options with which to generate brand awareness and also humanize their brands. Sharing photos of products, photos of your customers, your employees. Show the backstage or back, the interesting part and that has more chicha.
You can do promotions, of course, but I’m already seeing brands that are doing it fatally. It would be a matter of not going back to commit the old mistake that we made in other social networks like Facebook, I’ll leave it there.
COMMENT AND GIVE LIKES TO THE PHOTOS OF OTHER USERS IS WHAT ATTRACTS THE MOST FOLLOWERS
After explaining all the factors that influence getting followers on Instagram, we have the most human factor.
We return to the usual saying that trying to interact with other users is how we manage to increase engagement. And that interaction on Instagram is based on likes, comments and of course, follow other people.
When you like the people you follow you are showing interest in what they upload to Instagram, especially if you take the time to leave a comment. And that courtesy is almost always translated, receiving that same treatment, with likes in your photos and new comments.
If this is done with strangers the effect is the same. You start to interact with people you do not know and connect with other people. If this behavior is repeated, the next step is to convert those people into followers. When you do this, they also increase the number of likes you receive in your last photos, because those users who arrive in your profile after having received your likes, like the last photos you have posted. If that user has more interest for you, he will look at your profile from top to bottom and will like in old photos.
Depending on how many followers of the profile you like your photos, it may be that all those likes that you make go unnoticed. This is so because normally the accounts that have many followers when they upload a new photo they quickly get many likes. A like you will be lost among all of his followers and it is more than likely that person will not see it.
In these cases, it is best to leave comments because the ratio between likes/comments that a photo receives is very high.
I like to use Iconosquare to leave comments and to like in some photos because it seems very practical to be able to do it with a computer. Both the ease of being able to answer more comments, see which users follow me and which do not, or mark the photos that I like at the click of a button, make me lose the right and necessary time in this social network, without having to access it. always from the mobile.
If you are very interested in a specific user and do not want to miss the opportunity to “like” all your photos, now you can activate Instagram notifications that will notify you when that user you do not want to miss anything has posted a new photo.
PUBLIC OR PRIVATE PROFILE?
A typical question that I usually receive from people who read this article and go straight to Instagram to write me a private message.
“Is it better than I leave my public or private profile to get more followers?”
In my point of view, it is a matter of logic.
If you leave your public profile you will be giving the opportunity for people to see first what kind of content you are publishing, so if what they see they like, you will have more chances of being followed.
I personally do not follow anyone who follows me and has a private profile, unless I know the person.
WHO DOES NOT FOLLOW ME ON INSTAGRAM?
Something they ask me a lot is how to know who stops you from following on Instagram, and the truth is that it’s super simple to know who has stopped following you.
Several of the tools that I have already mentioned in this article can help you to know who does not follow you on Instagram, such as, for example, Iconosquare.
The only drawback of Iconosquare is that it only shows you the relationship you have with a user, that is: it shows you if you follow him, if he follows you, if you follow each other or if none follows each other.
And to know about each user that follows you, you have to look at their profile.
On the other hand is the mobile application Crowdfire, which has a section called “Recent Unfollowers” that will tell you exactly which users have stopped following you in the last days.
Every time you want to check who has stopped following you on Instagram, you just have to click on the refresh button and look for the profiles that you have stopped following lately.
TRICKS TO GET MORE FOLLOWERS ON INSTAGRAM
TRICK # 1: USE INSTAGRAM STORIES
Instagram Stories allows you to upload stories to Instagram and place hashtags and locations where those stories have been recorded. The trick is to use at least 1 hashtag in the story and geolocate the place where you made that story.
When you upload a story with a hashtag and the geolocalized, your Instagram Stories will appear highlighted on Instagram in the “Search” section and whenever someone searches for a hashtag that you have used.
Important: do not forget to put your own username in the story, because many people will click on it and enter to see your profile.
Then in your story, you can see how many people have seen it both by the hashtag and by the location you have placed.
If your story is highlighted in one place, you can get many more followers in the area.
TRICK # 2: MAKE A CONTEST GIVING SOMETHING AWAY
The contests are very useful to get new followers.
The key in this trick is to get around something that attracts people who may be interested in your profile and not only in what you are raffling.
To give you an example, if you draw an iPad, you will get many new followers who only want to get the gift you draw. But if they do not touch, soon they will stop following you, because they are profiles that go after the gift.
However, if you are able to find something that is related to your profile, your activity or your profession, surely you are able to retain more time to those users and hook them with your photos.
HOW TO MAKE A DRAW ON INSTAGRAM:
- Announce what you are raffling by posting a photo with the text “Raffle”. It must be clear that you are doing a lottery because if not, people will like the photo but will not participate in it.
- Make it clear that to participate you must first follow your user and like the photo. This is essential to get new followers on Instagram with a draw. By having them follow you, you will increase your number of followers, and by making them like the photo, you will be more likely to appear in the featured section of Instagram photos.
- Indicate that they have to mention 3 people to participate (you can change the number of people who have to mention to participate, but do not pass in. If you force them to mention 5 users, few people will participate).
- Explain when you will say the winner or winner of the raffle and how you will communicate it. A good idea is to indicate the date and comment that you will communicate the winner of the draw in the text of the photo you publish that day.
I will continue working on my profile on this social network because I have already seen that it is a good tool for my personal brand.
I am studying how Instagram is affecting my brand, both at the level of traffic received on my website (through the link in my profile’s biography), and at the business level since I am reaching more people and have generated some opportunity of business.
I think it’s the best social network to show a little more about me, about my lifestyle and that they know me, as well as getting to know super interesting people and follow what they are doing.
If you follow the advice of this post I am sure that you will notice an increase in your followers; They worked for me.
If you know any important factor to get followers on Instagram and want to share with me it will be a pleasure.
By the way, I answer all the comments ?
